Chapter 13: Denzil Faces the Dragon
1. How has the relationship between Sam and Theresa changed? Why?
(Sam and Theresa are now friend because they said sorry.) √
2. Read to the bottom of page 130. Predict: What has happened to make Denzil and Travis so
late? Explain in at least 20 words and give reasons.
(Denzil and Travis are late because Denzil and Travis were not both there Travis was only there Travis had lost Denzil and he was worried about Denzil. I understand.
3. Why did Denzil disappear?
(Denzil disappeared because he was frightened by the siren. √
4. Sam works out what the dragon is. What is it? What are the 3 clues she uses to work this out?
(Sam works out that the dragon is really a train because it has one blazing eye, it can roar and rail like long claws.) √
5. Why doesn’t Denzil run from the dragon?
(Denzil doesn’t run from the dragon because he is frozen √
6. How is Denzil saved from the ‘dragon’?
(Denzil is saved from the ‘dragon’ when Travis pull him out of the rail √
7. Read to the end of the chapter. What did Denzil say that made everyone laugh? Why was this
funny for everyone?
(Everyone laughed when Denzil said wait till I tell old battybird all those roaring beasts that live in caves all those dragons the knights fight they all trains wow. This is funny because what he is saying. √

Chapter 14: The Witch’s Secret
1. What has changed about the way that Denzil thinks about Sam? Why has there been this change?
(This is how Denzil now thinks about Sam: she is a friend to him This has changed because of if she had not known that the dragon was a train then he would have died √
2. How do the family feel about Denzil leaving? Why?
(The family feel sad about Denzil leaving because they feel like he was part of the family √
3. Sam now sees that the house across the street is empty and that the ‘For Sale’ sign is back where it was before. What does this mean?
(The fact that Sam now sees that the house across the street is empty means Mrs Otherwise has gone √
4. What four clues do we have that Mrs Utherwise and Mother Wyse are the same person?
(We know that Mrs Utherwise and Mother Wyse are the same person because of Sam and Denzil can only see her,
her black cat and blackbird are the same thing, the for sale sign was there and they can not both hear) √ Good detail here, Violet
5. Read to the end of the chapter. Why does Mother Wyse give Denzil a ‘knowing, secret smile’ as
she closes the door?
(Mother Wyse gives Denzil a knowing, secret smile because of his good days. √ Yes - and because she knows where he has been and what he has been doing.
